Runners/walkers set out to frighten Rockland's south endWinchenbach, Hall fastest in MCST-hosted event
Rockland — Frost greeted runners and walkers as they gathered at the Mid-Coast School of Technology on Main St. on Saturday morning, Oct. 26. Under a sunny sky, but with winter-like temperatures, nearly 30 people showed up for the 'Frightening 5K,' an event to raise money for the SkillsUSA student group at MCST.
The course was billed as a 3.1 miles, starting and ending at the MCST campus; however, post race, it was discovered the route fell short and was only 2.7 miles.
Darren Winchenbach, dressed as Sting from World Wrestling Entertainment, was the first finisher overall with a time of 17 minutes and 28 seconds. Kelly Hall was the first female, and eighth runner to finish, in 21:38.
Naomi Crocitto was given the award for best costume.
SkillsUSA is a national organization dedicated to supporting students, teachers and industry to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Each year, students attending CTE schools throughout the state and country compete in their respective fields ranging from automotive technology to welding and fabrication. MCST has participated for more than 20 years, sending hundreds of students to the state competition in Bangor.
School officials hope the fundraising run will become an annual event.
