Camden — With a new course and better weather than last year, the 2014 "Run for Your Life" Emergency Services Challenge drew nearly 100 participants to the Camden Snow Bowl May 24.

The event raises money for Atlantic Engine Company No. 2 of Camden Fire Department as well as Hope Fire Department.

Competitors in three different heats navigated a 5 kilometer course up one side of Ragged Mountain across the top and down the other side. The course was loaded with obstacles and challenges that tested the participants to the extreme. Lifting cinder blocks, crawling under barbed wire and through a culvert and jumping over fire were some of the challenges on the way to the finish line.

Not every obstacle was mandatory to complete, but if a participant chose not to, they were required to perform "Burpees" -- a push-up to a standing leap -- instead.

The overall best time was turned in by Jack Hauprich of Camden, who completed the course in 44 minutes, 42.29 seconds. Caleb Pease of Appleton finished second with a time of 45 minutes, 24.82 seconds. The top female finisher was Katy Genthner of Waldoboro, with a time of 51 minutes, 8.4 seconds. Allison Leonard was the second female finishing the course in 57 minutes, 24.22 seconds.

Hauprich said he did not make up his mind to register for the event until the night before and said he hadn't done any training prior to the event.

"I wasn't sure what was going on, I thought I might do it, then Brandon and Ryan [Graffam] said they were in, so here I am," Hauprich said. "The new layout of the course was really good and wasn't as hard as last year I don't think, but still pretty darn hard."

Shawn St. Cyr, of Jefferson, proved to be the iron-man as he competed in all three heats finishing with times of 51 minutes, 26.63 second; 1 hour, 5 minutes, 28 seconds and 1 hour, 25 minutes, 94 seconds.
