Route 1 car accident breaks telephone pole, downs power lines, detours traffic
Waldoboro — Part of Route 1 was closed Oct. 22 after a green Toyota Corolla driven by James Clark, 36, of Union, slammed into a telephone pole on the northbound side of the road sometime before 2:30 p.m.
Clark was the vehicle's only occupant, and did not sustain any injuries in the crash. Clark was arrested for operating after revocation of his driver's license, and was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.
The car was initially reported missing, but the owners did not press the issue once the vehicle's location had been determined, he said.
Communications to the Waldoboro emergency services departments were disrupted as a result of the crash, and Warren emergency response vehicles were called in to assist.
The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when firefighting units arrived on the scene, but the fire was extinguished without incident, according to Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer.
The stretch of Route 1 between Old Route 1 and Route 235 — referred to as Moose Crossing — will remain closed until Central Maine Power repairs the broken pole and fix the downed lines.
