Rockland — Members of the public are welcome to attend a candle-light vigil Saturday, Dec. 15 for the victims of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The vigil will start at 5 p.m. on Main Street in Rockland near Oak Street.

It was organized by Rep. Elizabeth Dickerson, D-Rockland. Dickerson also serves as city councilor and works as a teacher in the Regional School Unit 13 school system.

Dickerson said Dec. 15 that she wants to hear from people what they feel should be done to make schools safer. She noted that school procedures for lock down and emergencies vary depending on the district. The state has no uniform policy for school emergencies, she said.

She said she supports Mayor Will Clayton's call for a meeting of school, fire department and police leaders to discuss what can be done to improve school safety.
