Nobleboro — Dozens of young Midcoast athletes have a District 2 Little League championship in mind, which was evident by the high level of play Thursday, June 28 in the opening round of the 9- and 10-year-old baseball tournament.
Both Rockland and Lincoln County prevailed in the opening round as each posted victories over Knox Suburban and Camden-Rockport, respectively.
The double-elimination tournament will continue next week, with the championship game slated for Sunday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m. All games for the district's 9-10 baseball tournament will be played at Val Picinich Field in Nobleboro.
The following is a recap of both games played Thursday:
Rockland 11, Knox Suburban 2
At Nobleboro June 28, Knox Suburban cut its deficit to 3-2 after the first inning, but Rockland rolled to eight unanswered runs and advanced to the winners' bracket with a nine-run win.
Rockland will face Waldoboro on Sunday, July 1 at 4:30 p.m. in Nobleboro. Knox Suburban, which falls to the losers' bracket, will play in an elimination game on Tuesday, July 3 at 6 p.m., opponent to be determined, also in Nobleboro.
Leading Rockland at the plate Thursday were Jason Leblond (double, 2 runs), Abe LeMole (run), Trevor Reed (double, 2 runs), Ben Ripley (single, double), Karl Ilvonen (single, run), Jude Forti (double, single, run), Cole Stevens (run), Carson Murphy (single, run) and Logan Putansu (run).
For Knox Suburban, Rylee Rapp (single, run), Cooper Wirkala (double), Michael Kremin, Anthony Radzimirski (single) and Adam Berry (run) paced the offense.
Trevor Reed pitched 3 1/3 innings for Rockland, allowing three hits and five walks, with eight strikeouts. Austin Pagano went the rest of the way, allowing one hit and one walk, with three strikeouts.
Travis Wyman started on the mound for Knox Suburban. He was one of four hurlers.
Rockland scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Knox Suburban tallied two runs in the first stanza.
Lincoln County 14, Camden-Rockport 1 (4 inns.)
At Nobleboro June 28, Lincoln County scored multiple runs in each inning and propelled itself into the winners' bracket round with a convincing win.
Lincoln County will face Waldo County on Sunday, July 1 at 2 p.m. in Nobleboro. Camden-Rockport drops to the losers' bracket and will play in an elimination game on Tuesday, July 3 at 3:30 p.m., opponent to be determined, also in Nobleboro.
Leading Lincoln County at the plate Thursday were Gregory (single, 3 runs), Crockett (double, single, 3 runs), Greenleaf (triple, 3 runs), Mercier (single), Cummings (run), Tomasello (single, 3 runs) and Skiff (run). First names for Lincoln County players were unavailable.
For Camden-Rockport, Aidan Schecter (single) and Mason Bloomquist (single, run) paced the offense.
Greenleaf, Crockett and Cummings pitched for Lincoln County, allowing two hits and one walk, with six strikeouts. Bloomquist, Nick Tausek and Henry Chamberlain pitched for Camden-Rockport, allowing six hits and nine walks, with four strikeouts.
