Rockland Kiwanis Meeting Minutes for November 12, 2012

By Kiwanis Club of Rockland | Nov 19, 2012

President Amy Pease called the meeting to order and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan Saucier offered the invocation. Guests included Key Club President Samantha Calamari, and Jaap Vrolijk's son Peter.

Committee Reports
Our District is collecting items for those in New York and New Jersey that were hit by Sandy. President Pease has sent out a list of items that will be collected at the Fall Conference. If you have items to donate, please get them to Amy before she leaves for the conference on Saturday.
The Oceanside Key Club is doing a leaf raking project. Call Jane Thompson to set up your time. They raised $125 for UNICEF via trick or treat. They still do childcare during PTA meetings, and they helped at the Special Olympics bowling event. They will be donating money to purchase turkeys for high school students in need for Thanksgiving, and are looking forward to helping with the Jingle Bell Express and selling Christmas trees.
The Connections Program wrote a thank-you note for our support of their program, and especially for the Boys Night Out and Girls Night Out events (which would not have happened without our donation).
Jingle Bell Express: Next meeting is 11/15 at 5pm at Trackside. Posters are made and have been sent to membership as a PDF. Please help put these up around the community. A cookie sign-up sheet is going around. We need 1200 cookies, and so far 900 have been pledged! A sign up also went around for volunteers each night; you can also sign up on the portal.
Christmas Trees: Sign up is going around for unloading the trees and set-up. The event will start 11/24. The prices are the same as last year: $30 for a regular tree, and $45 for a large tree.
Meals on Wheels: Doc Lombardi will deliver tomorrow, and the rest of November is all set.
E-waste drive and AIO Food Pantry: Brenda Batty wanted to thank all the volunteers that came and helped out, especially Samantha Calamari from the Key Club (who did a great job getting donations from those dropping off electronics). Five Key Club members helped, and many Aktion Club members. Overall, the event raised $1750 for the AIO food pantry, and the 53ft truck was almost filled with the community's electronic waste.

Recognition of Members
Birthdays: Bill Batty was not at the meeting to present birthday trivia.
Anniversaries: Jane Dagley and Meg Sawyer each are celebrating 14 years of service.
Secret Greeter: Marjorie Kinney caught Everett Spear II, Russ Cloutier, and Brenda Batty.
Badges: All ok.
50/50: Jim Heavey had the winning ticket, but did not draw the Joker.

Happy/Sads
There were many people happy about the success of the e-waste drive, for our guests, and for the success of Jane Thompson and the Key Club.

Speaker
Bobby Deetjen from the Midcoast School of Technology came to speak about what the school has to offer students and adults in the community. Their 16 different programs allow students to receive state and national certifications, high school and college credits, or dual community college credits. He gave a brief description of all the programs the offer and what types of projects the students are working on. He encouraged all members to visit the school to see what the students are working on and take a tour of the school
