Rockland Kiwanis Club Meeting Minutes from May 12, 2014

By Kiwanis Club of Rockland | May 20, 2014

President Katie Tarbox called the meeting to order and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan Saucier offered our invocation. Guests included President Tabox's daughter Jordan and her friend Joe, and our speakers Gaila Dwyer and Edith Dow.

Committee ReportsThe Cupcake Challenge sign-up sheet went around. There is one volunteer slot available from 1:30pm to 4:30pm on the 05/18 event. The Oceanside Key Club is having an installation on 05/21 at 7pm in the cafeteria. President Tarbox has some free pumpkin plants available to members. Please remember to sign the attendance sheet on your table.
The committee list is available for review; feel free to sign up on additional committees.
This being the annual meeting, Gordon Page presented (on behalf of the Nominations Committee) a slate of officers for the 2014-2015 administrative year: Jim Heavey, President; Bill Batty, Jr., President Elect; Broo Temple, Vice President; Treasurer, Sumner Kinney; Mark Curtis, Cliff Blastow, Dan Saucier, and Jane Dagley, Directors. Gordon also mentioned that though the secretary serves at the pleasure of the President, it was proposed we ratify Greg Hamlin at this time. John Batty made a motion we accept the slate, and Barbara Hanson seconded. There were no nominations from the floor, and the slate passed unanimously.
The Erin Donovan show is this Saturday night. We need to sell tickets, and we need a few Kiwanians to come early to pass out programs. Skip-A-Meal: John Batty turned in the list to the Treasurer, and noted there were still some people who hadn't paid. The Akiton Club is holding a bottle drive. If you take your bottles to Coastal Opportunities, they will turn the money into the Aktion Club for you. If you take your bottles to Andes Variety in Warren, and mention it's for the Aktion Club, they'll "pay" $.06 per can. Meals on Wheels: May is full, but June has two openings. The food wagon was at the Special Olympics meet. It is in need of a new "home" for the summer, where we can park it and plug it into AC. Cliff Blastow thinks he may have a spot.
The Scholarship Committee has met, and decided on 13 recipients.

Speaker
Gaila Dwyer and Edith Dow work for a division of Maine Medical Center dealing with helping those with mental illness find employment. There are 84,000 Mainers receiving disability, and that goes up on average about 1000 people per year. Of those, 30% have psychiatric disabilities. The groups goal is to find employment for 100 of those people every year. They found work for 133 people last year, and have already placed 95 workers this year.
