Rockland Kiwanis Club Meeting Minutes for March 11, 2013
President Amy Pease called the meeting to order, and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bill Batty, Jr. offered the invocation. Guests included Brad Galley and speaker Joe Ryan.
Committee Reports
The Biz Expo sign-up went around. The Expo is March 20th, and the Chamber will be holding a Business After Hours right after the Expo. Since the club is a member of the Chamber, club members are welcome at the Biz After Hours. Bike Rodeo committee will meet Wednesday the 13th at 5:15 at J&B Printers. Priority 1 committee members should be in attendance too.
Bill Batty announced that due to his current work schedule, a new bulletin editor might be in order. Broo Temple expressed some interest in serving in that capacity. Bill and Carol Kelley would continue to serve as back-up note-takers. The Nominating committee met last week and looked at some potential candidates. Meals on Wheels. Carol Kelley tomorrow, and the 19th is open. The Aktion Club met last week and had a guest speaker (Henry Lunn) on inventing.
Recognition of Members
Jaap Vrolijk sent a thank-you note for all the cards he received from Janet Vrolijk's passing. He should be back with us in April. Birthdays: Shannon Kinney, John Batty, Jane Dagely, Celia Knight, and Broo Temple. Club Anniversaries: Betty Jones.
Secret Greeter: Amy Pease admitted it was her first time, but everyone shook her hand.
Badges: All ok. 50/50: No one claimed the first ticket called, and Marcia Whitten wasn't able to find hers. Still, since she couldn't produce the winning #, a second ticket was drawn, and Janet Page had it. She didn't win the $22.50 in the pot.
Happy/Sads
Janet Page was happy for winning the 50/50, happy for the Hope elephants, happy grandson Lucas came to visit, happy for Lucas's birthday, and sad Baby Pease hasn't been born yet. Jackie Harjula told a bad joke (punchline: Paddy O'Furniture), and was happy the Battys were back from vacation. Jane Dagley was happy to be back, happy to pick chocolate out of the birthday box, happy for running a 5k, and happy to participate in an alumni Dancing with the Local Stars group dance. Jim Heavey was happy for skiing. Shannon Kinney was sad she had to miss the speaker. Brenda Batty was happy for vacation, and also happy to be back. Bill Packard was happy his Navy son would be home soon. John Batty was happy for those who filled in with the Aktion Club while he was gone, and happy Gordon Page covered the ELIMINATE! campaign. Celia Knight was happy for a girls-night-out in Portland. Gordon Page was happy for our guests, happy for our speaker, and happy for his grandson's birthday. Sumner Kinney was happy the Battys were back, happy Jaap Vrolijk would be home soon, and happy for the upcoming electricity fundaiser. Marcia Whitten was happy someone found her lost keys, and sad she lost her 50/50 ticket. Amy Pease was happy for a great weekend, and paid a missed meeting dollar in anticipation of not being with us next week.
Speaker: Joe Ryan is the owner of Adventure Advertising, and a board member of the Chamber, and a board member of PAWS animal adoption center. His business is a full service ad agency doing vehicle wraps, graphic design, printing, and trade show displays. He noted that every customer wants to feel like they're your only customer, and that sometimes there can be value in a transaction that's not profitable. He suggested looking at the total relationship with a customer, and not just one transaction. Sometimes, it's better to lose money on one transaction in order to keep a good account. He also talked about PAWS (formerly the Camden Rockport Animal Rescue League), their name change, their campaign for a new building, and their services (accepting relinquished animals, providing animal adoption services, and spaying/neutering).
From your Spiritual Aims Committee: “Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”
