Rockland Kiwanis Club Meeting Minutes, 8/26/13

Guests: Kurt and Sam from the Aktion Club, Kelly Flint, Jaap's sister Frieda, Brian Tarbox, Haley Hall, Stan Hansen, Rachel Kinney, Sam Calamari from Oceanside Key Club, Caroline Luttrell a 2013 scholarship recipient, Jane's grandson Joah
-No meeting next Monday as it is Labor Day
-Jackie Harjula, Dan Saucier, Gordon Page, and Janet Page reported on District Convention last weekend in Hyannis. It was a great time had by all. Jackie is our incoming lieutenant governor and learned about her upcoming responsibilities and met other incoming officers. There were many informative and educational programs. The club received many awards including an Administrative Award, Social Media Award, and Distinguished Club.
-Hot Dog Wagon will be at the Harvest Hoot on September 7th. We are still looking for a couple more members to help out in the wagon.
-The Grand Raffle drawing will be this Saturday evening August 31st at Rock Harbor on Main St, Rockland. The drawing will be between 7 and 7:30. If you have any sold or unsold tickets please make sure to let Sumner know so they can be accounted for.
-Sponsored Youth- Jane updated the club that Sam Calamari (Oceanside Key Club president) is trying to raise funds so she and some other students can go to the International Convention. They are doing a flamingo fundraiser right now. There is a flock of flamingos that they move every two days to someone's lawn. When the flock arrives, the recipient can have them sent to another location by making a donation to the club.
-The Aktion Club just finished their raffle of lobsters. Marcy Wass was the winner. The are looking to hold a dance for their next project. They are looking for a location right now. They also just held their elections.
-The Interclub committee is looking to hold an interclub on September 4th at the Waldo Club. Meetings are held in Searsport at The Mermaid at 6:30. There will also be an interclub on September 9th with the Waterville Club. Their meetings are held at the Inland Hospital at 6:00pm. Please let Jackie know if you are able to attend either.
-Meals on Wheels - Paula and Marcy are delivering tomorrow. There are openings on September 3rd and 24th.
Secret Greeter- Margie Kinney was the secret greeter and she caught Jim Heavey, Doc Lombardi, and Russ Cloutier
Badges- No one was caught without their badge
50/50 - Aktion club member Sam had the winning ticket, but she did not draw the joker.

John Christie and his son Josh Christie came to speak to the club about their writing. John has published a book called The Story of Sugarloaf, and Josh has published a book called Brewing in Vacationland. Together they also write weekly a weekly column about summer activities for Maine newspapers. This fall their columns will be compiled to make a book that will be used as a guide for those visiting Maine.
