Rockland Elks Men's Softball League playoffs on horizonNo. 1 Mid-Knight Auto, No. 2 Boothbay Yacht square off in regular-season clash
Rockland — Another hard-fought, competitive regular season in the Rockland Elks Men's Softball League — which includes a slowpitch format — is now in the books as the league is about to begin its always entertaining and unpredictable double-elimination playoffs.
The final regular-season games were played Thursday, Aug. 22, and the outcome of those contests determined the fourth, sixth and seventh seeds in the upcoming playoffs.
On Thursday, Port Clyde Lobster earned a 19-10 win over Aflac, while Simmons Lobster Wharf defeated New Leaf Construction 24-7. Thus, Port Clyde Lobster nabbed the fourth seed, Aflac finished sixth and New Leaf Construction seventh.
The final regular-season standings include: 1, Mid-Knight Auto, 19-1, .950 winning percentage; 2, Boothbay Yacht, 16-4, .800; 3, Simmons Lobster Wharf, 15-5, .750; 4, Port Clyde Lobster, 11-9, .550; 5, Smokestack Grille, 11-9, .550; 6, Aflac, 10-10, .500; 7, New Leaf Construction, 9-11 .450; 8, McClean Plumbing, 5-15, .250; 9, Bolduc Correctional Facility, 3-17, .150; and 10, Back Cove Yachts, 1-19, .050.
Two squads that knew where they finished well before Thursday's games — No. 1 Mid-Knight Auto and No. 2 Boothbay Yacht — squared off on the Elks Field on upper Rankin Street on Wednesday night, Aug. 21, with Boothbay bolting to an early lead before Mid-Knight rallied for a 13-10 victory.
The outcome did not matter in the standings, only in final records.
In that game, both teams hit the ball hard, including bombing several balls over the fence for home runs, and made stellar plays in the field.
Those types of performances should continue throughout the upcoming playoffs, unless the other teams in the league can stop them.
The 10-team, double-elimination playoffs will begin on Monday, Aug. 26, when No. 8 McClean faces No. 9 BCF and No. 10 Back Cove Yachts plays No. 7 New Leaf.
The playoffs will continue Tuesday, Aug. 27 through early September.
No. 4 Port Clyde Lobster will face No. 5 Smokestack Grille at the Bolduc Correctional Facility, while No. 3 Simmons Lobster Wharf will host No. 6 Aflac at the Elks Field in a pair of Aug. 27 contests.
Top-seeded Mid-Knight Auto will face the winner of the McClean Plumbing/BCF game on Wednesday, Aug. 28. If BCF defeats McClean Plumbing, the Aug. 28 game will be played at BCF, while if McClean defeats BCF, the Aug. 28 game will be at the Elks Field.
The final quarterfinal game will have No. 2 Boothbay Yacht host the winner of the New Leaf/Back Cove game Aug. 29.
