Rockland City Manager resigns, citing health, reflection on priorities

City Manager James Chaousis has resigned.

Rockland — City Manager James Chaousis has resigned, noting that his recent surgery for a brain tumor caused him to reflect on his priorities.

He explained his resignation in a letter released by Mayor Louise MacLellan-Ruf on June 22. His resignation comes after his recent letter to City Council in which he told the Council to either fire the city attorney or begin the process of coming up with a separation agreement with himself.

The Council met behind closed doors last week with an attorney and Chaousis.

"I recently underwent successful surgery for a brain tumor, which has caused me to really consider the toll this job has had on me," Chaousis said in his resignation letter. "This life-changing experience has caused me to focus on the aspects of my life which are most important to me, and therefore, I offer my resignation as the City Manager of the City of Rockland, pursuant to my employment contract.

"I leave knowing that the city is better for the work we accomplished. We had some solid success bringing professional integrity, fiscal responsibility, and strategic thinking to Rockland: We no longer tolerate inappropriate conduct by city employees, we brought in talented new blood at harbormaster, we hired a much-needed fire chief, and crafted an honest budget with an eye toward long-term investment.

"Rockland must invest in itself to spur economic growth. I hope the city will commit to continuing this positive trajectory, rather than revert back to the status quo which has resulted in seven city managers in seven years.

"It has been an honor and privilege to perform these duties. I will especially miss the dedicated and hardworking team that came together while I was here."

Good evening FM Jr.

Pls allow me a short stroll down memory lane  . . .

1] councilor Geiger won by a slim margin

2} councilor Isganitis was voted out of office

3] Council Ackor won by a large margin

You remind me when former councilor Isganitis stated that "people like me" are the reason that few People show up at council meetings.

Pls do not let reality slap you in the face.

Let us take the lessons we should have learned from the past year or so and move forward. Although I am not a fan of Mr Chaousis, he deserves respect for dealing with a brain tumor. Comments like Myslabodski's is a good example of why qualified citizens do not want to serve the community.

It is time to hire someone local who knows the people and the situations we face. There are people up to the job; you may know one. If you do, please, encourage them to step up to the plate.
