Rockland Café surges past Rockport in 8-inning thriller

Baseball teams continue to battle on diamonds as summer approaches

The Midcoast Babe Ruth League continued to swing for the fences with teams in action Sunday, June 8.

Scores from games played June 8 included: Rockland Café 14, Rockport 11 (8 inns.); Wiscasset Merchants 5, Union Farm Equipment 4; Union Farm Equipment 4, Wiscasset Merchants 1; Waldoboro 8, Damariscotta Lions 2; and Damariscotta Lions 12, Waldoboro 2.

Damariscotta Lions' 12-2 win over Waldoboro was a regular-season game for Damariscotta Lions, but an exhibition game for Waldoboro. This was decided by coaches before the start of the regular season in an effort to give all teams 11 regular-season games.

The standings through games played June 8 include: Rockland Café 4-0, Swan Lake Grocery 3-0, Damariscotta Lions 3-1, Waldo County 2-1, Wiscasset Merchants 2-2, Union Farm Equipment 1-3, Rockport 0-3 and Camden 0-3.

The following is a recap of recently-reported results:

Rockland Café 14, Rockport 11 (8 inns.)

At Rockport June 8, the visitors plated three runs in extra innings and remained unbeaten. Rockland Café scored one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, seven in the seventh and three in the eighth, while Rockport scored three in the first, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and sixth innings and three in the seventh.

Jack Freeman, Michael Dougherty, Matt Waldron, Josh Peaco, Coby Dorr and Anthony Moore pitched for Rockland Café, allowing eight hits and eight walks, with five strikeouts.

Cam Gushee and Jesse Fraser pitched for Rockport, allowing 12 hits and seven walks, with 12 strikeouts.

Leading the visitors at the plate were Zack Robinson (2 singles), Titus Kaewthong (triple, single), Sam Townsend (2 singles), Michael Dougherty (single), Mitchell Delfrate (single), Waldron (single), Dorr (single) and Moore (single).

For the hosts, Austin Charkowick (2 singles), Fraser (2 singles) and Nick Denny (2 singles) paced the offense.

Union Farm Equipment 4, Wiscasset Merchants 1

At Wiscasset June 8, UFE plated two runs in both the first and sixth innings and prevailed over Wiscasset Merchants. Wiscasset Merchants scored one run in the first inning.

Leading UFE at the plate were Riley McCollett (triple, 2 singles, 2 runs), Brenden Lash (single, run), Patrick Madden (single, run), Ryan Simmons (2 singles) and Adam Wilcox (2 singles).

McCollett pitched for UFE, allowing five hits and one walk, with 11 strikeouts.

Full names for Wiscasset Merchants players were unavailable.

Wiscasset Merchants 5, Union Farm Equipment 4

At Wiscasset June 8, Wiscasset Merchants earned a split on the day as they bested UFE by one run. UFE scored one run in the second and third innings and two more in the fourth, while Wiscasset Merchants scored two in the second and three in the third.

Adam Wilcox and Patrick Madden pitched for UFE, allowing seven hits and two walks, with six strikeouts.

Leading UFE at the plate were Riley McCollett (single, run), Quinn Ashmore (single), Adam Wilcox (single, run), Ryan Simmons (double), Nathan Emerson (single, run), Tyler Field (single) and Eli McCollett (single, run).
