Robert E. McMahan

Jan 31, 2013

Cedar Rapids, Iowa — Robert Earle McMahan died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he had lived for a short time with his daughter.

He was born March 9, 1934 in Owls Head, the middle son of Lucy and Edwin McMahan.

Bob served in the United States Air Force from 1953 through 1957, where he learned to be an airplane mechanic. He spent many of his working years as either a mechanic or a lobster fisherman, passing on both skills to his son and grandsons, then spent time following several creative business endeavors.

Bob was an avid bargain hunter and negotiator, delighting in the thrill of the chase and as a result, ending up with a vast collection of parts, tools, vehicles — and at least three of anything else that might be useful.

Bob always enjoyed taking long road trips. Whether it was for work ventures, like when he delivered orders of wire lobster traps to New York and Massachusetts, or whether it was for family, like when he drove all over the southern states to visit one of his daughters as she followed her husband's Naval career, or to Utah to deliver cars to another daughter struggling through college, Bob was always ready to jump in the driver's seat and cover mile after mile.

He was kind-hearted and always willing to help anyone with anything, rain or shine. If something was broken, he could figure out a way to make it work, or invent something new to do its job. Bob was always exploring and coming up with more ideas. He had big dreams, big ideas, and an even bigger heart. He will be deeply missed.

Bob is survived by his son Robert McMahan Jr. and his wife Judy of Owls Head; three daughters Linda Harford of Owls Head, Julie Walsh and her husband Michael of Maryland, Lisa Whitman and her husband Michael of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two step-sons John Cowley and his wife Kathy of Utah and Mark Cowley and his wife Tracy of Utah. Bob is survived by many grandchildren and nieces and nephews as well as several great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his brothers Donald "Checker" McMahan of Owls Head and Richard McMahan of Owls Head and spent 38 years married to Marilyn McMahan.

Bob is predeceased by his son Randall McMahan and his grandson Daniel Curtis.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at the LDS chapel, located at 100 Old County Road in Rockland. All are welcome to join in celebrating his life and for a potluck meal following the service.
