Rivers featured in Festival of Arts
Belfast — The annual Festival of Art, sponsored by Senior College at Belfast and the University of Maine's Hutchinson Center, will run Thursday through Sunday, May 16 through 19, at the University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center, 80 Belmont Ave./Route 3.
The non-juried exhibition of work by Maine artists age 50 and older will open with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception Thursday; continue Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. In addition to Alan Magee’s presentation Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., special events include a reception for the RSU 20 Student Art Show Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Admission to the entire festival is free and open to all.
Rebecca Rivers of Searsport is this year’s featured artist, and her painting “Free Falling Revisited” will be prominently displayed. Rivers of Searsport, who juried into the last Portland Museum of Art Biennial, said she is drawn by water — whether salt or fresh; roaring, gurgling or still; ocean, lake, pond or puddle. She said her paintings are a joyful answer to that call and that it has been a gift to her life to have the opportunity to wander the shorelines and woods of Maine. In her wanderings, she became enchanted with the patterns she saw on water surfaces. That enchantment informs her many-layered watercolor paintings.
“We all have many layers that make up who we are and each layer is affected by things in the other layers. Even those things buried below affect the pattern above on the surface,” she has said.
