Richard C. Possee Sr.
Rockland — Richard "Dick" Charles Possee Sr., 88, passed away peacefully Dec. 4, 2013, at the Knox Center in Rockland.
He was born July 1, 1925 to Charles and Helen Possee in Buffalo, N.Y. He grew up there, and graduated from the University of Buffalo after his service in the Navy during World War II. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17. While Dick was in the Navy, he was on the Destroyer Escort US Moore DE240 in the North Atlantic.
He hunted for German wolf pack submarines while escorting shipping convoys. When World War ll ended he was in Pearl Harbor preparing for the potential invasion of Japan. After the war, he served in the Navy in China. After leaving the Navy, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers where he dredged channels in the Great Lakes before beginning work for General Motors where he was a finance executive and retired after 25 years of service. He retired at the age of 55, and for the rest of his life, he was able to do whatever he wanted, whenever he felt like it, which gave him great joy.
Dick loved reading and was a regular at the local library. He ran every day until he was 80, and even afterward, he continued to walk every day and swim. He enjoyed playing hockey and cross country skiing in the winter. He loved to travel and attend theater productions, and he enjoyed eating out and his nightly martini. After he retired he lived in western Massachusetts and Scottsdale, Ariz. Dick moved to Cape Cod and ended up living there for about 15 years after the death of his wife. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Dick was predeceased by his loving wife, Pauline, of 42 years, his brother George Possee, and his childhood friend Johnny Voltz.
He will be missed by many, especially his family: son Richard Possee Jr. and family of Union, daughter Kim Possee and family of South Orleans, Mass., son Craig Possee and family of Milford, N.H., son Keith Possee of Seattle, Wash. and his sister Marge Orsolitz and family of Buffalo, N.Y.
