Redwings use sturdy defense, strong hitting to stop BenchwarmersLeague's top two squads to meet for crown Aug. 23
Camden — After 63 regular-season and 15 playoff games, it will come down to one final meeting between two squads for all the marbles in the Camden Adult Coed Softball League.
While the No. 1 Knox County Benchwarmers and No. 2 Camden Herald Redwings will not actually be playing to win marbles, they will battle one final time to win the coveted league championship cup, held tightly by Misfits the past eight years.
A winner-take-all finale was made possible when the Redwings, coming from the losers' bracket, defeated Benchwarmers 15-3 Wednesday night, Aug. 22 at the Camden Snow.
Thus, the two squads will meet for the title on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Snow Bowl.
Overall, the Redwings are 15-4, including 4-1 in the double-elimination playoffs. The Benchwarmers are 14-4, including 3-1 in the postseason. The Benchwarmers beat the Redwings 16-11 earlier in the playoffs. Both teams finished the regular season 11-3, with the Benchwarmers holding the tiebreaker.
On Wednesday, the Redwings scored four runs in the first inning, five in the second, five in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Benchwarmers tallied one in the first inning and two in the seventh. The Redwings used several strong offensive innings and superb all-around defense to secure Wednesday's must win.
Leading the Redwings' offense were Christian Pieri (2 singles, double, 2 runs), Christian Wincklhofer (run), Sami Commeau (double, 2 runs), Kyle Weaver (home run, double, run), Gabe Blodgett (single, home run, 2 runs), Lucas Brower (home run, single, run), Mike Curtis (2 doubles, run), Juliette Laaka (double), Phil Curll (single, run), Katie Benedict (single, 2 runs), Reade Brower (run) and Fritz Burke (single, run).
For Benchwarmers, Jay Young (double, run), Daphne Ripley (single), Jason Yates (single, run), Tim Jackson (single, run), Heath Smith (single), Chris Burns (double) and Steve Gibbons (2 hits) led the offensive charge.
