Ramona A. Collins
ROCKLAND — Ramona Ann Collins, 82, of Rockland passed away peacefully Aug. 31, 2012, at Windward Gardens in Camden following several years of declining health. Mona, as she was affectionately called, was born Aug. 26, 1930, in Mexico, Maine, and was the daughter of Roy and Mary Johnson. Mona grew up in Rumford and attended area schools. Following high school graduation in 1948, she enrolled in nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Portland. In 1951, she earned her nursing degree and started her nursing career at the Augusta State Mental Hospital where she met a co-worker, Robert A. Collins. They were married on April 25, 1952, had six children and eventually made their home in Rockland.
Mona distinguished herself in the nursing profession for 31 years, working at Knox County General Hospital and later at Penobscot Bay Medical Center. Mona was often in high demand in the IV therapy department and to this day is remembered fondly by her former co-workers. Mona enjoyed gardening, reading and was very good at sewing and making clothes for her children. She is also remembered for her skill in knitting, making various sweaters and afghans. She also enjoyed traveling and often went on overseas trips to see the world.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Collins Sr.; her stepson, Timothy Collins; and two sisters, Lorraine Johnson and Arlene Johnson.
Surviving are her children, Patty Vinal and her husband, David, of Warren, Sandra Clement of Union, Robert A. Collins Jr. and his wife, Alice, of Rockland, Cheryl Cash and her husband, Jeff, of Owls Head, Charles Collins of Rockport, and James Collins and his wife, Lisa, of Rockland; grandchildren, Karel, Sam, Matt, Casey, Becky, Jamie, Jeff, Mike, Eddie, Miranda, Kayla, Jacob, Rhona and Lorrie; and many great-grandchildren including another to be born this December. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great blessing to her and brought much joy to her life. She is also survived by two sisters, Helen McCormick of Florida and Marion Jones of Rumford; and a brother, Lawrence Johnson of Minnesota.
Calling hours will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the West Rockport Baptist Church, 545 Park St. in West Rockport, with Pastor David English officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery in Union.
