Pottery sale to benefit healthy food fund
A 14th-generation potter from Japan will be selling her wares the week of Sept. 29 to help support the Hatchet Cove Farm Financial Aid Fund.
Hatchet Cove Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm located in Warren, that provides weekly seasonal vegetables to more than 200 Midcoast families.
The Hatchet Cove Farm Financial Aid Fund helps a wide range of Midcoast families afford the fresh, healthy food of the HCF Community Supported Agriculture programs. In order to fund the financial aid program, the farmers at Hatchet Cove Farm have applied for grants, held a pizza party at the farm, co-sponsored a dinner at In Good Company, and many CSA members make donations to the fund along with their CSA payments.
The fund makes it possible for the farm to do everything from match payments for members paying with food stamps, to cover a payment or more for a family in tough straits. In 2013, the HCF Financial Aid Fund has shared more than $5,000 with well over 30 Midcoast families.
The HCF CSA fundraiser in 2013 is being held by CSA member Hanako Nakazato. Hanako is a 14th-generation potter from Japan who creates beautiful, simple, functional pottery.
She splits her time between Japan and Maine, and over time has compiled a large quantity of seconds of her work. She will be selling these seconds at a 50 to 90 percent discount at all of the HCF CSA pick-up locations during the week of Sept. 29, with the proceeds going to the HCF Financial Aid Fund.
Hanako has a studio in Union and her work is available at local stores and galleries (including The Black Parrot, CRAFT and Aarhus). These sales are open to the public. Visit monohanako.com to see examples of her work.
