Poets, artists unite By The Sea
Port Clyde — A special poetry/art event will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Gallery By The Sea, Main Street/Route 131 in the village. Six poets will spend the day writing in response to one or more of the paintings in the gallery, reading the poems at an evening reception open to the public.
The seeds for this event were first planted in 2009 when the Farnsworth’s Art Museum’s Paint the Town event brought together artist Kathleen Fox of St. George and poet Carol Willette Bachofner of Rockland. Fox did an on-the-spot painting of the Brass Compass, and Bachofner successfully bid on the painting at silent auction. The poet asked permission of the artist to reproduce the painting on the cover of her poetry book “Breakfast at the Brass Compass.” Thus a friendship and collaboration were born.
The two will work together in collaboration again at the poetry/art event when poets and artists will meet, some for the first time. Bachofner said that meeting an artist in person after writing is a wonderful experience; their first “meeting” is by way of encountering the work and writing about it, when there is a sense of mystery about the person behind the painting. The artists also get the opportunity to meet face-to-face with someone who has been inspired by their art to create another form of art. This kind of collaboration is a win-win for both and deepens the awareness that art lives in many forms and is mutually inclusive.
Fox lives and works in Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde, and Bachofner is the Poet Laureate of Rockland. The other participating poets are Sherry Abaldo of Rockland, Elizabeth Berkenbile of Warren, DiTa of Friendship, Judy Kaber of Belfast and Margie Kivel, Rockport.
The Gallery By The Sea artists are Leo Brooks (deceased), formerly of Monhegan Island (paintings owned by Sally MacVane); Fox; Sylvia Murdoch of Port Clyde; Chuck Paine of Tenants Harbor; and Wilder Oakes of Spruce Head. The gallery opened this summer after a hiatus of several years. It is located next to Village Ice Cream.
The event will feature wine, cheese and chocolate. All are invited to attend. For more information, contact Fox at 372-8863 or Bachofner at 390-0871.
