Poetry Slam, New Year’s Eve

Dec 30, 2013
Jacob Fricke

Belfast — The Belfast Poetry Slam is pairing up with New Year’s By The Bay to ring in the new year with poetic velocity and all due spunk. On Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Playhouse theater, 107 Church St., former Belfast Poet Laureate Jacob Fricke will host a live-action poetry performance contest open to all.

Poetry fans are invited to come to The Playhouse ready for high art, high vaudeville, live words and bold times as this mock-Olympics performance injects drama, heartbreak, spunk and grace into the everyday conception of poetry.

Poets bold enough to take the stage should bring several poems of their own composition, each no longer than three minutes long. Following the familiar slam format, no costumes, props or musical instruments are allowed. After each contestant’s performance of a single poem, five judges randomly selected from the audience will hold up Olympics-style scorecards to furnish a numeric score, and the victors will advance to the next rounds.

The evening’s top poet will receive a $75 cash prize on the spot. Other prizes of literary interest and cultural relevance, including gift certificates, ‘zines and volumes of poetry, also will be awarded.

The New Year’s Eve slam is being held as a part of New Year’s By The Bay, and a NYBB 2014 adult or youth/student button, which admits one to all performances and activities of New Year’s By the Bay, is required for admission. Buttons are available for purchase at Parent Gallery, 92 Main St.; Belfast Co-op, 123 High St.; and Belfast Free Library, 106 High St. Belfast. Buttons are $18 for adults, $5 for K-12 students. Admission for those younger is free.
