Plenty of spills, no chill at cardboard box derby
Camden — A huge turnout of entrants and spectators at the second annual Cardboard Box Derby at Camden Snow Bowl were treated to warm temperatures Saturday, March 8.
For those competing, the temperatures made for a slushy course and a soggy seat but the competitors' faces were anything but defeated. Taking the top prize with a time of 7.41 seconds was the four-person team Crazy Cruisin' Cousins; in second place was Box of Doom with a time of 8.11 and in third place after leading most of the afternoon, was the Jamaican Bobsled Team with a time of 9.35 seconds.
Other prizes awarded included most team spirit -- won by the Jamaican Bobsled Team -- as well as Magic School Bus for most competitors in one box with 15 and the most creative design, which went to a lobster.
There were 88 entries at the start of the race, though several teams scratched at the last minute. The event was emceed by Snow Bowl employee and Harbormaster Steve Pixley, who provided colorful commentary as the cardboard creations careened down the tubing hill.
