Playgroup plays year's first Thomaston dance

Playgroup will be in Thomaston Saturday, Jan. 25.

Thomaston — Midcoast-based band Playgroup will usher in the first Thomaston contra dance of the new year Saturday, Jan. 25, starting 8 p.m. in the gym of the Thomaston Academy building, 60 Main St./Route 1.

Caller will be John McIntire of Unity, who will teach all dances. Everyone welcome, no experience is necessary, no partner is needed and kids dance for free.

The band brings a classic, vibrant sound to a broad repertoire of dance tunes, delivered with talent, finesse and contagious enthusiasm. Since 2009, Playgroup has played many venues across Maine including regular appearances at the Downeast Country Dance Festival. Band members are Julia Plumb on fiddle, accordion, hurdy-gurdy and foot percussion; Alden Robinson on fiddle; Zachary Davis on tenor banjo, fiddle and percussion; and Abraham Stimson on piano.
