Pirates retain control of Camden following harbor battle
Camden — Canon and pistol-fire rang out as smoke filled the air around Camden Harbor Sunday, Sept. 1, while pirates fought a battle to retain control of the town against a force approaching from the sea.
The staged battle kicked off just after 1 p.m. as part of the annual Camden Windjammer Festival on the public landing and Harbor Park. Earlier in the day, land-based forces recruited help from young attendees of the festival — the Hellion Brigade — arming them with foam swords with which to take hostages following the battle.
Crowds gathered around the harbor to watch the scene unfold as Harbormaster Steve Pixley provided colorful commentary over loudspeakers.
