Pen Bay Medical Center recognized for patient safety
Rockport — The Leapfrog Group’s annual list of top hospitals was announced on Dec. 4 in Baltimore and included is Pen Bay Medical Center.
The announcement came at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting, focusing on transparency as the key to improved hospital safety, and Top Hospital Awards. The Leapfrog Group is an independent group that gathers national and publicly reported information on quality measures, resources and efficiency.
In addition to the top hospital designation, Pen Bay was honored with a renewed “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group in November 2012. Pen Bay's A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM. The A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals are based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.
“To be selected as a top hospital in the nation is truly an exceptional honor. I am proud of Pen Bay Medical Center and pleased that our commitment to our community to provide excellent patient care has been rewarded with national recognition. This is an important milestone in our journey toward excellence always," said Pen Bay Healthcare president and CEO Wade Johnson in a news release. "I am also very proud of Pen Bay Medical Center for maintaining an A score in patient safety. This grade is a reflection of our dedication to patient-centered care and represents the hard work of the entire health system to continually meet the highest safety standards.”
“The Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction is by far the most competitive award a hospital can receive. Leapfrog holds hospitals to the highest standards on behalf of our purchaser members and their employees. By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, Pen Bay Medical Center has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. This hospital stands out as one consistently providing safe, high quality care, and I would be comfortable sending my family to Pen Bay Medical Center for care,” said Leah Binder, The Leapfrog Group's president and CEO. “I congratulate Pen Bay Medical Center for its safety excellence, and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.”
Pen Bay Medical Center was selected as a Top Hospital out of nearly 1,200 hospitals nationwide participating in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey and is one of two hospitals in Maine to receive this designation. Other hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in suburban and urban settings. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.
