PAWS: Fill the room in your heart with Charlie

Feb 04, 2013

Do you — as we do, sometimes — wish kittens could stay lovably little forever? Is your heart big and soft enough to want to help a kitten with medical needs? Is there room there for a sweet 9-month-old girl who will probably not get much bigger than she is now and who needs eye drops daily? PAWS animal shelter is seeking someone who will say yes to all these important questions and adopt Charlie. An injury Charlie sustained when she was only 2 months old damaged her pituitary gland, which is responsible for growth. She is also missing a hormone that tells her body to retain water, so the eye drops replace the water she cannot keep. These needs may keep Charlie from ever getting adopted but shelter staff hope she will find a loving home. For more information about this special cat and her condition, call the shelter at 236-8702.

For those who don’t want to adopt an animal right now but do want to do something to help the shelter animals, the cats love to have people come into their rooms and tidy things up. They appreciate clean blankets, clean windows that let in the light and, of course, nice clean litter boxes. They also don’t mind if visitors give them a little love while they are there.

Another way to help is with vet runs. Some of the shelter's charges need to go to the vet from time to time, and they need a ride. Vet runs are usually in the morning, and it takes about 15 minutes to get to the vet's office.

Many more ways to help are listed on the PAWS website at pawsadoption.org.

Don’t forget Pints for Paws from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Rollie’s Bar & Grill in Belfast. There will be great raffle prizes and live music by Paddy Mills, and Rollie’s will donate $1 to PAWS for every pint sold. Pints for Paws is always a crowd-pleaser, and the shelter has  benefited from a plethora of pints. The shelter staff extends a thank you to Loyal Biscuit Co. for putting this together and thanks to all of the generous businesses who have donated prizes for the raffle.

On the shelter's wish list: cat toys, dog toys, catnip, cotton swabs and cotton balls.

PAWS is located at 146 Camden St. in Rockport. It is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday,  the phone number is 236-8702 and the website is pawsadoption.org.
