Past garden club presidents honored in Owls Head
Owls Head — The Owls Head Garden Club recently celebrated its 40th anniversary at a tea at the Owls Head Community Building. Hostesses for this event were Hilary Matlack, Lydia Kaeyer, Marilyn Smith and Vera Mathieson. President Arlene Siletti welcomed members and former members and past presidents were honored.
The club was founded in 1972 by a group of local residents to encourage and cultivate an interest in gardening. The club aids in the protection and conservation of natural resources and encourages the study of horticulture and flower arranging. The organization also promotes the beautification and preservation of community areas.
Garden club members maintain plantings at the Owls Head Community Building, the Winnie Barbour Teardrop at the intersection of North Shore Drive and Route 73, the Village Memorial and Foster Square; planters at the town line and the Grange traffic Island as well as window boxes at the town library and the grange.
Proceeds from the club’s annual Spring Plant and Bake Sale in June and the Pie Sale in August as well as other fundraising activities are used to fund the club’s annual scholarship fund, which assists area college students with their studies in the fields of environmental studies, horticulture, landscaping or related fields. In the past, the club also offered "camperships" to send local students to Tanglewood. Other local organizations have benefited from gifts from the club: among them, The Maine Coast Heritage Trust for the purchase of Ash Island, the Herring Gut Learning Center, Owls Head Central School, the Area Interfaith Outreach Food Pantry and Knox County Meals on Wheels.
Monthly meetings of the club are held from September through June at the Community Building. The club currently has about 50 active members and welcomes other interested area residents to become involved in the organization.
