Parent education program hosts gardening playgroup for families
Families gathered at the Topsham Public Library on Friday, June 13th to attend a gardening playgroup hosted by Maine Families of Knox, Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties. The group began with families sharing their experiences and interests with gardening. They discussed some of the benefits of introducing young children to gardening and ways that children could help, such as digging in the soil and watering the vegetables. These two actions can enhance development in a number of ways. Also shared was how even the pickiest of eaters may be more likely to try new foods if they helped to grow them.
Inspired to get their hands dirty, parents and children alike eagerly participated in the two themed activities for the group: print making with leaves and flowers and planting grass heads. Once families finished with these activities, they took advantage of the blankets spread out around the room to sit and enjoy a healthy snack while reading books together. When the group was over, families left with projects in hand and some great ideas on ways to continue to involve their children in gardening at home.
