Panthers small in numbers, big on working, improving
Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Medomak Valley High School golf team:
Coach/years coached current team: Peter Stuart, 12th year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 0-10 regular-season record. The Panthers shot a 425 at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B team and individual state qualifier and thus, did not qualify for the state team championship.
Roster: Juniors Aaron Smeltzer, Tyler Emerson and J.P. Lobley; sophomore Adam Wilcox; and freshman Cameron Allaire.
Notable graduation losses: None.
Significant impact golfer: Wilcox.
Team strength: Four of the team's five golfers return from last year.
Team goals: To see steady improvement throughout the season both individually and as a team and to qualify for the state team championship.
Top league opponent: Camden Hills.
Outlook: The Panthers are excited for the season to begin, and with only five golfers, they will all get plenty of quality playing time on the links in competition.
“With only five players, we will need everyone to play in every match and be firing on all cylinders to be competitive as a team,” said Stuart.
Typically six golfers from each team participate in a varsity match, with the top four scorers factoring into the team's overall nine-hole stroke score.
Stuart says Wilcox, who was the team's No. 1 player as a freshman, again will occupy that spot this year.
