Panthers ready for court battles with minimum players

By Staff | Apr 28, 2014

Waldoboro — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Medomak Valley High School boys tennis team:

Coach/years coached current team: Bill Hinkley, first year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 0-12, 16th in Eastern Class B. The Panthers did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Senior Cyril Miller; juniors Noah Beck, Aaron Smeltzer and Devan Hooper; sophomore Ezra Hinkley; and freshmen Richard Kinney and Greg Wadsworth.

Known graduation loss: Conor Dahlberg.

Significant impact players: Miller, Beck, Smeltzer, Hooper, Hinkley, Kinney and Wadsworth.

Team strengths: Youth and experience.

Team goals: To show team and individual growth and display top-tier sportsmanship.

Top league opponents: Camden Hills of Rockport and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle.

Outlook: After ending last season without a victory, and only losing one player to graduation, the only place the Panthers can go, in theory, is up. They have a new coach in Hinkley and a crop of young players with experience.

“Medomak [Valley] teams have a long tradition of upholding old-fashioned values on the field and on the court and we plan on continuing that this tennis season,” said Hinkley.

All seven players will have a significant impact as any injuries will force the Panthers to forfeit individual matches.
