Paintings, pottery and photos in the Barn

Paintings by Trish Weisbrot are featured in her “Line by Line” show at the Cushing Historical Society’s barn.

Cushing — The Cushing Historical Society’s Arts in the Barn summer series will open August with paintings by Trish Weisbrot, pottery by Candace Crosby-Rogers and photography by Matt Rogers. The public is invited to a 5 to 7 p.m. reception Friday, Aug. 1, at the Society’s barn at 17 Hathorn Point Road. The show will continue Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Weisbrot’s “Line by Line” exhibit will focus on drawings in graphite including a new process utilizing steel wool and varnish on paper adhered to board. Her popular Minitudes and Olileverockstar Portraits also will be on view.

Crosby-Rogers has been a potter for seven years, and though she has thrown pots on a wheel, she prefers the freedom of hand or slab building to add unusual textures or curves; and she combines glazes to create new colors. Crosby-Rogers enjoys blending form with function. Her work also can be seen at The Prints and the Potter, 36 River Road.

Rogers was trained at Rochester Institute of Technology in medical, scientific and commercial photography, which was his career for about 20 years. Intrigued by the techniques Robert Mapplethorpe used in lighting his studio floral arrangements, he enrolled in a fashion photography workshop at what was then the Maine Photography Workshops in Rockport, where he learned creative lighting techniques. He fell in love with studio work and began experimenting with his own artificial lighting arrangements. Rogers works in both wet darkroom and digital photography; teaches photography and digital filmmaking courses; and in the summer sells his work at The Prints and the Potter.
