P.A.W.S: Your cat is waiting for you

Have we detected a hint of spring after the long, long cold? Technically the season has arrived; virtually we’re still not sure. But here at PAWS, we have a houseful of wonderful creatures who are hoping that this is the spring when they find a fur-ever home. Meet two of them now.

Mary Louise is a gorgeous 10-year-old Maine coon mix. Like many of her breed, she loves being petted around her ears and under her chin, but she is such a perfect lady that she prefers not to sit on your lap and leave behind reminders of her silky, silvery coat. Instead, she likes to sit next to you so she can share whatever you’re doing, be it reading or watching TV or simply being still and loving her as she loves you. This is not, however, a lazy lady. She is crazy about catnip, and chasing string while under the influence, or not, is very high on her list of good things. In the warm-weather months she is used to going outside and taking her cat nap during the afternoon, and she would love it if her new owner spent most of the time at home with her.

“Charlie is my darling,” says an old Irish folk song. Or maybe it’s Scottish. At any rate, our Charlie is definitely a darling. Four years old, he is a very beautiful big boy who loves spending time with people. He adores being petted, of course, but even more he likes belly rubs, and he’ll roll right over to make it easy for you to gratify his desire. And he is as sweet as he is handsome.

On our wish list are non-clumping cat litter, catnip, towels, laundry detergent, bleach and paper towels.

Kittens are synonymous with spring, and soon our kitten room will be full of some of the sweetest, funniest, most loveable creatures in the world. But our other rooms will be full of wonderful cats who are no longer kittens — and some of them by a long way — who are looking for homes where they can relax and share with you the wisdom they have acquired with their years and the love they’ve been storing up for a person and/or people of their very own. We’re pretty sure your cat is here waiting for you, so please stop by and see if you can spot her or him. And if you’re not sure, we know your cat will pick you right out of the crowd. If you don’t already know it, animals can supply some of the most satisfying and faithful love in the world, which is why we have never been without one or, preferably, more. Our sweethearts are sprawled around the room as we write this column, just waiting for us to finish so we can all retire, and our heart is full of joy at their closeness, their silence and their secret thoughts.

We’re located at 146 Camden St. in Rockport, and we’re open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Our phone number is 207-236-8702 and our website at pawsadoption.org is never closed! And thank you, as always, for your caring and support.
