‘Oz’ trivia & dinner benefit planned for Hope Elephants at Trackside
ROCKLAND – The intrigue and intricacies of the “Wizard of Oz” will take stage as part of an Oz-themed trivia dinner and benefit for Hope Elephants. Tom Wilhite and Willard Carroll, who have the world’s most comprehensive collection of Oz materials, are collaborating with Trackside Station to host the All Things Oz Trivia & Benefit Dinner for Hope Elephants, taking place at the restaurant at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28.
The event coincides with the 75th anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s classic motion picture “The Wizard of Oz,” and the Farnsworth Art Museum’s exhibition “The Wonderful World of Oz - Selections from the Willard Carroll/Tom Wilhite Collection,” which opens Saturday, Oct. 12, in the museum’s Crosman Gallery.
The evening will feature a seated dinner followed by an “All Things Oz” trivia competition, as well as Wizard of Oz-themed drinks, a Cupcake Bar courtesy of Laugh Loud Smile Big of Rockport – featuring cupcakes in honor of Toto’s 80th birthday – and a silent auction.
Tickets, which are $35, include dinner and a donation to Hope Elephants. Guests will have a choice of pumpkin seed-crusted haddock filet with a butternut squash & sweet potato puree with roasted parsnips, baby carrots and picked cranberries or Cornish hen with lemon roasted fingerling potatoes and ginger butter with spaghetti squash and leeks. There will be a vegetarian option. Trackside Station also will donate $1 from every Wizard of Oz-themed drink purchased.
A variety of silent auction items will be up for bid, including a personal VIP guided tour of the Oz exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum by the collectors, a VIP guided tour of Hope Elephants, a weekend at a Revere Hotel in Boston with drinks and hors d'oeuvres at Emerald Bar, a year of Self-Serve Dog Washes for your Toto courtesy of Loyal Biscuit Co., golf for two with a cart from Rockland Golf Club, a donation from the Samoset Resort, a gift basket from Down East Books, with more items being added.
The donation to Hope Elephants will be made in the name of the winning team. Along with the donation being in their name, team members also will receive a copy of a new book by John Fricke, “The Wonderful World of Oz: An Illustrated History of the American Classic,” which contains hundreds of images exclusively from the Carroll and Wilhite collection, to be released in October by Down East Books. Additionally, Carroll’s Oz-related book, “I Toto: The Autobiography of Terry, the Dog Who Was Toto,” published by Abrams in September, also will be among the prizes.
Hope Elephants’ mission is to provide a unique and caring home for injured and aging elephants and to provide an educational program that inspires visitors to participate in wildlife conservation. Their resident elephants, Rosie and Opal, are Asian elephants who have worked their entire lives in circuses. Hope Elephants is the only facility in the United States where elephants receive daily state-of-the-art medical and physical therapy and nutritional support. All care is administered by their committed and professional team of experienced elephant handlers and veterinarians. All money raised from the event will go towards their mission.
