Old Dogs beat Arnholians in putt-off in island tourney
North Haven — Though the sand traps looked more like water hazards, the soggy conditions did not dampen the spirits of the competitors June 9 in the fourth annual Fox Islands Lions Golf Tournament on the North Haven Golf Course.
The Old Dogs of Vinalhaven and the North Haven Arnholians were knotted in a dead heat after 18 holes, resulting in a putt-off between the two team's designated most valuable players, Dennis Warren and Greg Carter.
In the end, the Old Dogs prevailed “by a large margin,” while Austin James won the longest drive competition. Ricky Swears, Torry Pratt and Mont Conway were awarded closest-to-the-pin honors, while Chris Davis was the winner of the 50/50 raffle and donated more than half the pot back to the event.
The Lions thanked sponsors for the event, including hole sponsors from the mainland: Waterworks, Trackside Station, O'Hara Bait, Penobscot Island Air and the Hampton Inn; hole sponsors from the island, Starlight Inc., Frank Adams, In Memory of James Henderson, F/V Michaela and Kyle II, David Arey Trucking, Five Fossils, Vinalhaven Fisherman’s Co-op, Hopkins Boatyard, Dwyer’s Plumbing and Heating, Tidewater Motel, Trickerville, The Harbor Gawker, The Paper Store, F/V Jordan Del, T-Dock Lobster, J.
