Rockport — There are classes for children, adults and families in October’s lineup of ArtLab workshops at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, 162 Russell Ave., including the monthly free ArtLab for All Ages workshop Saturday, Oct. 6.

New is ArtLab Studio, an after-school workshop for children designed in the spirit of a working art studio, where playfulness and experimentation are key ingredients. Children will use a variety of media to create evocative images and objects that tell stories and illuminate personalities. This workshop will run Wednesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Cost is $10 a session (scholarships are available); sign up for one or all four sessions. Camden and Rockport elementary students can take Bus No. 11.

The First Saturday ArtLab for All Ages workshop will be Posable Sculpture; participants will create movable sculptures, made from wood and various fittings and painted with watercolor. The workshop will be Saturday, Oct. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and is open to everyone.

CMCA will also offer an ArtLab for Adults workshop in Portraits and Self-Portraits, Present, Past & Future. This three-session workshop will run Wednesdays, Oct. 10, 17 and 24 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will think outside the box, experimenting with various media and collaborating with others to make art in new and perhaps unfamiliar ways. The cost for all three sessions is $50, $40 for CMCA members.

To register for ArtLab Studio or ArtLab for Adults, call CMCA at 236-2875. No registration is required for ArtLab for All Ages workshops. Materials will be provided for all workshops.

Instructor for the October workshops is Marcie Jan Bronstein, who is an artist, a designer and a teacher. She is known for her hand-colored images and work with the photographic negative; her art is exhibited, published, commissioned and collected internationally. “Fotoplay!”, her prompt book for children, was published this year. ArtLab and ArtLab instructors are available for birthday parties; call CMCA for information. CMCA is grateful to Camden National Bank, the Milton and Sally Avery Art Foundation, the Davis Family Foundation and individual donors for their support of ArtLab.
