Oceanside track athletes ready to make noise
Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Oceanside High School track-and-field team:
Coach/years coached current team: Jesse Bartke, fifth year (coached first two years at Rockland).
Last year's record/playoff information: The Oceanside boys finished 14th (6 points) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships, while the Oceanside girls did not score as a team. Neither team scored at the state Class B championships.
Roster: Seniors Abby Hersom (distance), Jacob Hyatt (distance) and James Nguyen (throws); juniors Riley Simmons (distance), Preston Spear (sprints), Jackie Thorbjornson (distance) and Nick Mahar (distance); sophomores Daly Winterich (middle distance), Laken Fournier (sprints), Rory Polybank (distance), Kate Kelley (throws), Kalie McGuire (sprints), Michaela Wright (distance), Julian Bucher (distance) and Kelsea Oakes-Boynton (throws); and freshmen Kyle Long (throws), Alex Barstow (throws), Jordan Mini (throws), Shannon Ripley (throws), Reagan Billingsley (throws), Haylie Witham (sprints), Sadie Thompson (sprints), Leila Chammas (sprints, jumps), Dylan Reese (sprints), Nate Hersom (distance), Zach Davis (sprints), Bri Ortiz (distance) and Anthony Marsh (jumps/sprints).
Known graduation losses: None.
Significant impact athletes: Abby Hersom and Preston Spear.
Team strengths: Youth and determination.
Team goals: To continue to improve and qualify as many athletes as possible for the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships and state Class B championships.
Top league opponents: Waterville and Erskine Academy of South China.
Outlook: “This is one of the hardest-working groups that I have had in quite some time,” said Bartke. “We are very young and I am expecting many of these young athletes to surprise some folks as the year goes on.”
