Oceanside squads look to keep pace with foes
Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Oceanside High School cross-country teams:
Coach/years coached current team: Jesse Bartke, fifth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: Oceanside boys finished 10th (234 points) in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship and 11th (276 points) in the state Class B championships. The Oceanside girls did not score as a team for either event.
Roster: Seniors Abby Hersom, Sam Dienesch-Calamari, Cole Chase and Jeb Fontaine; juniors Riley Simmons and Jackie Thorbjornson; sophomore Daly Winterich; and freshmen Emily Davis, Brianna White-Ortiz and Dylan Reese. Other runners have joined the team in recent weeks, including Amanda Hoppe.
Known graduation losses: Sam Johnson and Love Eklund.
Significant impact players: Hersom, Mahar, Thorbjornson and Simmons.
Team strengths: Intelligent and enthusiastic runners.
Team goals: To improve with each meet.
Top league opponent: Camden Hills.
Outlook: Hersom, Simmons and Mahar figure to be the team's top runners, with Hersom likely to be the team's top scorer. Bartke hopes to get more contributions from other runners by season's end. The team has added Thorbjornson and Hoppe, both of whom also play for the school's field hockey team, a development that surely will make the Mariner girls a formidable opponent.
“The preseason came and went quickly,” Barkey said. “We are looking to improve with every meet and save our best times for the end of the year.”
