Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Oceanside High School cheering squad:

Coach/years coached current team: Hope Billingsley, third year.

Last year's record/playoff information: The Mariners did not compete at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship due to a student-athlete sustaining a last-minute injury. The Mariners also finished 12th (84.5 points) among 12 teams at the Eastern Class B championships.

Roster: Senior Jamilyn Del Buono; juniors Hailey Hobbs, Hannah Loring, Alexandra Nibby and Jana Talbot; sophomores Brittaney Mahonen, Rachel Philbrook and Charlotte Strong-Ames; and freshman Kaydin Frederick.

Known graduation losses: Kendra Flanagan, Elizabeth Fletcher, Caroline Luttrell, Chelsea Keyes and Shale Peters

Significant impact athlete: Hobbs.

Team strengths: Hard work and determination.

Team goals: To improve and grow stronger than last year.

Top league opponents: Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Leavitt of Turner and Gardiner.

Outlook: The Mariners had a tough season last year and hope to improve on their last-place finish at the regional competition. Billingsley said her squad is considering this “a new year.”

Oceanside does not have a great deal of varsity experience on this year's team after losing five team members to graduation and several others who are participating in the school's foreign exchange program. Billingsley said her team is focused on the basics and hope to make a stronger showing once the competition season rolls around.

“We are really starting all over again where we lost too many girls,” she said. “We can't get any lower than last year.”
