Rockland — Two Midcoast high school golf squads opened the season on Friday, Aug. 29 at Rockland Golf Club as Oceanside and Medomak Valley hosted matches against different opponents.
At the end of the day, it was the Mariners who secured their first win and the Panthers their first loss of the campaigns.
Oceanside, a Class A squad, bested Lawrence of Fairfield, while Medomak Valley, a Class B squad, was downed by Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.
The Mariners' and Panthers' home course is Rockland Golf Club.

Oceanside 8, Lawrence 1
At Rockland Aug. 29, the Mariners sailed to a convincing win over the Bulldogs in their first match of the season. Oceanside finished with a four-golfer, nine-hole team stroke total of 174 to 205 for Lawrence.
The individual results, with Oceanside players listed first, were: Nick Mazurek (35) beat Kelsie Dessent (47); Ryan Lawrence (45) beat Carley Larochelle (56); Griffin Lombardo (48) lost to Maxx Cobb (45); Zeke Hamlin (46) beat Austin Knowlton (63); Nate Hersom (49) beat Spencer Folson (57); and Hunter Dinsmore (54) beat Alex Bevier (84).
Oceanside's Mazurek earned medalist honors with a strong 1-under par score.
Maine Central Institute 9, Medomak Valley 0
At Rockland Aug. 29, the Panthers could not tame the mighty Huskies and were downed in their first match. MCI finished with a four-golfer, nine-hole team stroke total of 169 to 215 for Medomak Valley.
The individual results, with Medomak Valley golfers listed first, were: Adam Wilcox (44) lost to Gavin Dugas (40); Aaron Smeltzer (50) lost to Carter Pearl (41); Tyler Emerson (score unavailable) lost to Eric Dugas (40); Brent Stewart (61) lost to Parker Morrison (52); Duncan Morrell (60) lost to Nate Tilton (48); and Josh Goldrup (61) lost to Seth Mason (52).
