Oceanside doubles up Medomak Valley, wins 10-11 baseball title

Local squad wins four straight games to claim crown

Rockland — Two days after clinching the all-important “if” game, the hits kept on coming for Oceanside in the final game of the District 2 Little League 10- and 11-year-old double-elimination all-star tournament Sunday, July 20 against Medomak Valley.

Oceanside, which advanced to Sunday's game via the loser's bracket after besting Medomak Valley 15-5 in five innings Friday, July 18, benefited from a five-run fourth inning and pulled away late as they claimed the district championship with a 10-5 win at E. Allen Gordon Field.

Oceanside (4-1) now moves onto the double-elimination state tournament, which begins Saturday, July 26 in Windham. Oceanside will face District 5 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

In previous tournament action, Medomak Valley (2-2) defeated Oceanside 7-3 July 12, Medomak Valley defeated Waldo County (0-2) 4-0 July 13 and Oceanside eliminated Waldo County 4-1 July 17.

Team members for all three District 2 squads include:

Medomak Valley — Noah Crosby, Parker Morrison, Colby Castner, Colvin Standring, Adam Berry, Ethan Reed, Jake Bickmore, Zach Winpenny, Addison Mellor, Garret Hutchins, Anthony York, Isiah Staples, Aiden Starr and Zach Benner. The team is managed by Scott Martin and coached by Chad Reed and Andrew Bickmore.

Oceanside — Nathaniel Barnard, Austin Chilles, Joey Curtis-Hamilton, Will Eaton, Darik Johnson, Finn Lynch, Hunter Moore, Hunter Norton, Logan Putansu, Tyler Sukeforth, Zach Upham and Landon Willis. The team is managed by Davin Putansu.

Waldo County — Gabe Kneeland, Cody Reynolds, Hayden Hunt, Josh Miner, Brady Moulton, Stephen Perkins, Kevin Moreau, Samantha Perkins, Isiah Therio and Nicholas Moreau. The team is managed by Otis Kneeland.

The following is a recap of the July 20 championship final between Oceanside and Medomak Valley, along with other recent district tournament games:

Oceanside 10, Medomak Valley 5

At Rockland July 20, Rockland doubled up Medomak Valley and claimed the District 2 championship. Oceanside scored two in the second, five in the fourth and three in the fifth, while Medomak Valley scored one in the first, two in the third and two in the sixth.

Leading Oceanside at the plate was Putansu (3 hits, 2 runs), Upham (hit, run), Moore (hit), Norton (hit), Barnard (run), Willis (run), Sukeforth (hit, 3 runs), Johnson (2 hits, run) and Chilles (run).

For Medomak Valley, York (run), Winpenny (2 hits, 2 runs), Reed (2 hits), Berry (hit), Mellor (3 hits) and Bickmore (2 hits) paced the offense.

Bickmore and Crosby pitched for Medomak Valley, allowing eight hits and four walks, with 17 strikeouts. Putansu and Barnard pitched for Oceanside, allowing nine hits and three walks, with 14 strikeouts.

Oceanside led 2-1 through the first two innings when Medomak Valley took the lead in the third after a pair of runs came in when York scampered home on an error and and Reed plated Winpenny on an RBI-single.

However Oceanside opened things up in the top of the fourth inning as Willis drew a walk and Sukeforth singled up the middle as Willis came all the way around to score on an error to tie the game.

Johnson then plated Sukeforth on an RBI-single to put Oceanside up 4-3, while Putansu plated Johnson on an RBI-triple and scampered home on an error, doubling Oceanside's lead. Upham scored later in the inning on an error as the team's lead swelled to 7-3.

Upham added a bases-loaded bunt single followed by a two-run single by Moore wrapped up the scoring for Oceanside.

Medomak plated two runs in the sixth after Bickmore belted an RBI-triple and came in on an error, but it was not enough as Oceanside hung on to win.

Oceanside 15, Medomak Valley 5

At Rockland July 18, Oceanside rallied for several strong offensive innings, including tallying six in the second and eight in the fifth to end the game, en route to the mercy-rule-shortened victory.

Curtis-Hamilton and Eaton pitched for Oceanside, while Reed and Berry worked on the hill for Medomak Valley. The Oceanside pitching duo finished with four walks and 12 strikeouts. The Medomak Valley pair had four walks and 12 strikeouts.

Keying the Oceanside offense were Lynch (3 hits, 2 runs), Putansu (2 hits, 2 runs), Moore (3 hits, 3 runs), Curtis (hit, run), Norton (2 hits, run), Johnson (hit), Sukeforth (hit, 2 runs), Upham (hit, 2 runs) and Chilles (run).

For Medomak Valley, Morrison (2 hits, 2 runs), Winpenny (2 hits, run), Casner (hit), Reed (2 hits, 2 runs), York (hit) and Bickmore (hit).

The following is a recap of the July 17 game between Oceanside and Waldo County:

Oceanside 4, Waldo County 1

At Rockland July 17, Oceanside earned a berth in the championship game as it bested Waldo County in an elimination game. Oceanside scored two runs in the third inning and two in the sixth, while Waldo County scored one in the fourth.

Leading Oceanside at the plate were Lynch (single, run), Putansu (single, run), Barnard (single, run) and Eaton (run).

For Waldo County, Hunt (double, single, run) and Perkins (triple) paced the offense.

Curtis-Hamilton pitched for Oceanside, allowing three hits and two walks, with 13 strikeouts. Miner pitched for Waldo County, allowing three hits and five walks, with 11 strikeouts.
