New Toys for Tots coordinator for Knox and Waldo counties

Oct 01, 2011

Richard Vargas, of Thomaston, has accepted the volunteer position of Toys for Tots Coordinator for Knox and Waldo counties. Vargas is part of the Midcoast Marine Corps League No. 637 and has volunteered with Tots For Tots for several years. Vargas recently returned from the Toy for Tots convention in Leesburg, Va. in September. He is active in the Marine Corps League and currently serves as Commandant of the Department of Maine.

"The mission of the Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community," said Richard Vargas, Toys for Tots coordinator, in a news release.

This year, Toys for Tots is operating from the Nativity Lutheran Church in Rockport, who has donated the space. Donations and toy pick up at the church will be made by appointment only. Donation boxes will be available at locations across the two counties starting Nov. 1. For more information on collection sites please visit rockland-me.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/donate-toys.asp .

"Our community has always been generous in the past and I would like to thank everyone for their support. With the holidays just around the corner please remember there is a new need for donated toys every year," Vargas said. For donations or toy requests call Richard Vargas at 354-6282 or email knoxwaldocountytoysfortots@gmail.com.

Toys for Tots of Knox and Waldo would like to thank sponsors for their support: Nativity Lutheran Church, Applebee's of Thomaston, Pizza Hut of Rockland and Rock City Motorcycles. The Midcoast Detachment of the Marine Corps League has supported the Toys for Tots initiative for many years. If interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor please call Vargas at the number listed above.
