New roster makeup forces Vinalhaven through overhaul
Vinalhaven — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Vinalhaven High School boys basketball team:
Coach/years coached current team: Matt Slivinsky, eighth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 5-13, 11th in Western Class D. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.
Roster: Seniors Owen Bineau-Williams (6-foot 4-inch center), Hunter Smith (5-10 forward) and Josey Doughty (6-1 forward); juniors Everett Webster (5-10 forward), Adam Young (5-9 forward) and Noah Slivinsky (5-9 guard); sophomores Doug Day (5-11 guard/forward) and Lewis Cray (5-8 guard); freshmen Tyson Goyette (5-10 forward), Cody Hamilton (6-1 forward), Cole Mills (5-9 guard), Liam Thomas (6-foot guard/forward) and Max Stanley (5-9 guard).
Known graduation losses: Scott James, Hayden Jones, Justin Newton and Shane Carlsen.
Significant impact players: Slivinsky, Cray, Stanley, Thomas, Smith, Hamilton and Bineau-Williams.
Team strength: Uptempo game plan.
Team goals: To make the Western Class D tournament and get better every game.
Top league opponents: Forest Hills of Jackman, North Haven, Jonesport-Beals, Buckfield and Valley of Bingham.
Outlook: The Vikings graduated four players from last year's squad and five others who played a season ago opted not to play this winter, so, in short, the islanders will have a significant overhaul on the court. Coach Slivinsky compared his squad to a “junior varsity team.”
“I took everyone that tried out this year,” said coach Slivinsky. “A lot of them are older, some are younger that just came into the mix. I took everybody, so there's a lot of inexperience. But there's some potential there as well.”
