New doctor joins Rockport Family Medicine
Rockport — Pen Bay Healthcare announces that Elizabeth vonFelten, MD, has joined Aiofe Redmond-Durow, MD, and Susan Butterworth, FNP, at the new Rockport Family Medicine, located at 731 Commercial Street in Rockport.
Dr. vonFelten received her medical degree from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., and did her residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital, also in Syracuse. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine
“Family medicine chose me,” said vonFelten, “because as I went through medical school I realized I loved absolutely all aspects of medicine, and I also have a need to know about everything. So I went into family medicine and absolutely love it.”
vonFelten’s special interests are in women’s health and medical dermatology – cases of acne, rosacea, moles and growths, rashes and the like. “It started when I got frustrated with trying to get patients in to see a dermatologist on a timely basis,” she said. “My interest grew when a good friend had an undiagnosed melanoma for months while waiting to get in to see a dermatologist. Fortunately, she seems fine now. I am looking forward to seeing medical dermatology patients here at Rockport Family Medicine.”
vonFelten chose Pen Bay Healthcare because “it is small enough for me to feel like a family member of a medical community,” she said. “I have always believed the practice of medicine is a profession where human interaction is essential, not only between patient and provider but also with staff, other professionals in the community and with family members – and that is how I practice medicine. I collaborate with patients to get to bottom of their problem, always with their input about their diagnosis and treatment. Taking care of a body is something a patient has to do 24/7. I only get to see them for an hour at the most, so I want to make sure they are on board with their treatment plan.”
vonFelten grew up in southern Maine. After her residency she was offered a position in Ithaca, N.Y., which she very much enjoyed, but eventually she felt “absolutely compelled” to return to Maine. She and her husband have purchased a home on Old County Road in Rockport. They have a daughter who is attending Divinity School at Harvard. vonFelten is an avid runner, plans to bicycle to her new office, and likes to ski and sail. She also hopes to learn to spin her own yarn.
