Nativity Lutheran welcomes new pastor

Rev. Wendy J. Anderson

Rockport — Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road, has called a new pastor, Rev. Wendy J. Anderson, formerly pastor at Concordia Lutheran Church of Pickerel Lake in Albert Lea, Minn.

Pastor Anderson will preside at her first service at Nativity Lutheran on Sunday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. She replaces the Rev. Jerry LiaBraaten, who retired in June 2015.

In one sense, Pastor Anderson is coming home. She was born in Caribou and graduated from Caribou High School in 1977. While growing up in Caribou, Pastor Anderson attended Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden. She attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in animal and veterinary science.

Prior to being called to the ministry, Pastor Anderson worked as a farm manager on a thoroughbred race horse breeding farm in Rhode Island, completed coursework in the Ag and Extension Education graduate program at Penn State University, and was director of Youth and Family Ministry at St. John Lutheran Church in Sudbury, Mass. It was there that Pastor Anderson considered changing careers and entered the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She graduated with a masters in Divinity in 2005 and accepted a call to her first church in Minnesota.

Pastor Anderson enjoys all the outdoor sports including golf, camping, kayaking, and cross-country skiing. In addition, she loves to garden and says that she is hoping to learn about fishing. She will be bringing her Labrador retriever, Anna, along with her as she makes the drive back “home” to Maine.

Pastor Anderson was particularly drawn to the outreach programs of Nativity Lutheran and she said she “feels a strong commitment to working for justice in the world as the hands and feet of Christ.” She also enjoys the prospect of working with children and their families and building a strong youth ministry program. She has a passion for preaching, teaching and serving others and looks forward to becoming involved in the Rockland community.

Pastor Anderson will have an opportunity to get to know members of the Nativity congregation during a potluck meal following Sunday’s Worship Service. Nativity invites people in the Rockland community and surrounding areas to attend the service and to welcome Pastor Wendy Anderson back home to Maine.
