Names released in Waldoboro fatal
Waldoboro — Waldoboro Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office continue their investigation in the cause of a head-on collision April 18 that took the lives of a couple from Massachusetts.
According to a press release from Chief William Labombarde, Edward Bean, 63, of Waldoboro was traveling south on Atlantic Highway at 1:30 p.m. just before Wink's Auto Service when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2014 Mitsubishi.
Why Bean's 2007 Dodge Caliber went into the north-bound lane is unknown at this time. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is reconstructing the accident.
There were no skid marks evident on the road.
No charges have been filed.
"Alcohol, speed and drugs were not a factor in this accident," said Labombarde in a telephone conversation April 19.
Bean was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, then transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He is listed in satisfactory condition, according to a hospital spokesperson April 22.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, Raymond Thompson, 68, and passenger Peggy Aldrich, 70, of Whitinsville, Mass. were pronounced dead at the scene. They were in Waldoboro to attend a wedding, according to an email from Labombarde April 21.
The Route 1 between Route 220 and Route 235 was shut down to traffic for more than an hour while police and sheriff's office personnel investigated.
Waldoboro Police and Fire departments and Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Hanson responded to the scene. Warren Ambulance provided mutual aid in redirecting traffic.
Correction: it was initially reported that Bean was traveling north.
