Mustangs, Mariners fall short in bids to qualify for states
Bangor — Bids by the Mount View and Oceanside high school cheering squads to finish among the top six at the Eastern Class B championship competition at the Cross Insurance Center and, thus, qualify for the coveted state event, went for naught Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25.
Among the 15 teams in the regional event, the Mustangs of Thorndike finished tied for 12th and the Mariners of Rockland/Thomaston placed 15th.
Hermon won the title with a score of 145.1, while Ellsworth finished as the runner-up at 142.8.
Among the five judges, Mount View scored 20.9. 18.8, 17.5, 21 and 20.7 for 98.9. But the Mustangs were given a 10-point penalty deduction, which placed the Mustangs at 88.9.
The Mariners scored 10.8, 16.8, 14.1, 12.7 and 16.3 for 70.7, with no deductions.
The team scores were: Hermon 145.1, Ellsworth 142.8, Old Town 131.4, Presque Isle 130.3, Caribou 121.1, John Bapst of Bangor 119.6, Erskine Academy of South China 108.7, Gardiner 106.1, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 102, Waterville 98.2, Nokomis of Newport 94.3, Mount View 88.9, Mount Desert Island 88.9, Winslow 80.6 and Oceanside 70.7.
Mount View team members include Siiri Pinkham, Mariah Ross, Amanda Schiessel, Clint Spaulding, Britni Bryant, Rochelle Porter, Lili Albright, Liz Clifford, Shelbe Lane, Katrina Steiner, Kate Walker, Amber Ayer, Kelly Dean, Arianna Kaczmarek, Alliy Kennedy, Alexis Ramee and Samantha Spaulding. The head coach is Carol Bryant.
Oceanside team members include Ami Del Buono, Hailey Hobbs, Hannah Loring, Alexandra Nibby, Jana Talbot, Thomas Curtis, Cadden Lavoie, Brittany Mahonen, Rachel Philbrook and Charlotte Strong-Ames. The head coach is Hope Billingsley.
