Everyone’s heard the old adage, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it,” and that is not only true of our muscles, but our brains.  They need exercise too.  Dakim is a computer based program designed to provide a fun, comprehensive brain workout in just 20 minutes a day and it’s coming to Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center located at 521 Main Street in Damariscotta in February.  It features vivid graphics, music, humor, movie clips, stories, and trivia to keep the program interesting, engaging, and fun.  The touch screen environment makes it easy, even if the user has not used computers in the past.  No keyboard, no mouse are used.  The user just listens, watches, and touches the screen to select a response.

Regularly exercising the mind is the key to memory and mental function, just as keeping physically active keeps our bodies fit and healthy. Dakim can help people from all walks of life stay mentally engaged and improve memory skills. Recent retirees or seniors may find Dakim to be a great way to spend part of the day while giving their brains a little workout.  There are five different levels, so users can find the one that suits them best. People who have already experienced some memory and cognitive loss may find that participating in the Dakim program improves their ability to focus.

Spectrum Generations will have a one-month Dakim Brain Fitness program trial period in February allowing community members to come to the Center, try the program and give their feedback to help decide whether Spectrum Generations should offer Dakin Brain Fitness on an ongoing basis.  Community member participation is crucial in this process. The Coastal Community Center is now setting up appointments for those wishing to try the program through February 28.  Community members are welcome to come in for multiple sessions as the makers of Dakim recommend its use three to five times a week for 20 minutes. If enough community members like using it, Spectrum Generations hopes to subscribe to the service.

Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center will offer a free Dakim Brain Fitness demonstration in its Cyber Café, on February 3 at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call 563-1363 to sign up for the Dakim Brain Fitness demonstration and discussion with RN Susan Garascia or for a brief orientation later in the week or month with members of the Coastal team.  After the initial visit, community members can sign up for more sessions.  Let the fun begin.

A clinical trial of Dakim BrainFitness, a computerized brain-training program from Dakim, Inc., has validated the program's ability to sharpen cognitive skills that can be lost with age. The study by California University researchers showed measurable improvements in cognitive performance after just 40 Dakim brain workouts of 20 minutes each over a period of two to six months.

The results carry broad significance for the 120 million Baby Boomers and seniors in North America – including 10,000 Americans now turning 65 every day – who are either dealing with or facing the threat of cognitive decline. The Dakim program uniquely combines scientifically based exercises using videos, music and humor to keep users engaged; cross-training in short- and long-term memory, critical thinking, visuospatial orientation, calculation and language; memory-boosting techniques to help users remember names, words, shopping lists, reading information and more; and patented technology that adjusts the sequence and difficulty of activities to each user's performance.
