Jun 30, 2012

Warren — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Route 1 near North Pond Road at noontime Saturday, June 30, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The vehicles involved were a 1997 Ford truck and a 1989 Yamaha motorcycle.

For a reason unknown at this time, the motorcycle struck the left rear of the truck while both vehicles were travelling north on Route 1, according to the news release. The crash threw both riders off the motorcycle.

On the motorcycle were operator Richard Connell, 75, and his wife, Margaret Connell, 72, of Rockland. Due to the seriousness of injuries, the two were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital in Lewiston.

The single occupant/operator in the truck, a 17-year-old (name withheld due to age), was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Warren Fire and Rescue as well as two ambulances from Waldoboro. Members from the Thomaston Police Department and the Maine State Police assisted with traffic as Route 1 needed to be re-routed around the scene for a short time. Further information will be released as soon as possible, the sheriff’s office said.
