Wind storms and snowstorms on the horizon
It hardly seems fair that I have to turn in my weekly column the day before a big Nor'easter is expected to hit. I’m sure there will be far more to write about after it arrives. Oh, well. Perhaps there will be news to report next week.
It seemed that most of Waldo County was without power the other day during the windstorm. I have never heard so many calls for the fire departments during a storm. I am hoping that the trees that were going to fall have already done so before this next storm hits. We have several large maple trees next to our house that would take out our entire home if they fell. I was nervous enough during all the wind the other day that I had the kids get dressed and we spent the rest of the storm in the basement.
Ironically, we never lost our power until the storm was over. I had a group of ladies over for a knit and gab night. Two minutes into the evening, the power went out. After stumbling around in the pitch black, I found a flashlight and some candles. I decided to step outside with the flashlight in case some of my guests were attempting to make their way to the door in the dark. At the same moment I opened the door, my mother-in-law was outside reaching for the door handle. Not expecting anyone to actually be at the door, I let out a blood-curdling scream that nearly sent my poor mother-in-law right off the steps. We all recovered and had a good laugh, though. The rest of the evening was quite enjoyable and relaxing, with the candles spread all around the living room.
There are still a few of you who have not licensed your dog(s) yet. Please remember that if they are not licensed by the end of this month, the late fee will increase to $50 per dog. If the added expense of getting a rabies shot for your pooch is stopping you from registering it, I just want to let you know that Blake Vet on Route 1 in Northport does $10 rabies shots on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Give them a call at 789-5700 before you go. If the weather is really bad they may be closed.
Winter fun day
The Neighborhood House will be holding a Winter Fun Day at the Morrill Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, for ages 5 to 12. The day will include sledding (weather permitting), bounce houses, games, food and a message from God’s word. Pre-registration forms are available at the church or by calling 338-6453. You can also register your child on the day of the event. They are asking for a $5-per-child donation to cover the cost of lunch and snacks for the day. My sons and a few of their friends attended last year’s event and had such a good time!
