Millay as Traveling Woman
Camden — The historic Whitehall Inn, 52 High St./Route 1, continues its popular Millay Summer Series celebrating the multi-talented poet, pianist and actor with A Traveling Woman: On the Road with Millay, an evening cabaret including wine and dinner, Thursday, Aug. 7, beginning 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required.
Rockland-born and Camden-raised, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay traveled widely throughout her life, as a child from Camden to Massachusetts to visit her mother’s family; as a young adult moving to New York to attend college and live in the bohemian world of Greenwich Village; and later with her husband on a world cruise and to Antibes and the Caribbean.
In 1921, Millay departed for two years as a foreign correspondent for Vanity Fair, telling her mother, “I carry my typewriter all over the world with me.” She moved from England to Paris to Vienna and even traveled to Albania on horseback. Millay included many references to travel in her poems and letters.
A Traveling Woman will feature the Rockland-based ambient music trio Algorithm performing “For Pao Chin” and other Millay poems. The group includes Mike Whitehead on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tom Luther on keyboards and performance poet and actor Jacob Fricke. Algorithm’s intriguing moods and soundscapes feature both electronic and acoustic media in concert with lively spoken word.
Well-known Maine poets Marita O’Neill, Duff Plunkett, Bruce Pratt and former Belfast Poet Laureate Elizabeth Garber will read from Millay’s travel poems and letters before dinner. During dessert, the featured poets will read their own poems about travel. Poet Kathleen Ellis will host the event.
The fee for A Traveling Woman: On the Road with Millay is $39.99 and includes a specially prepared three-course dinner with wine and dessert. For more information or to make reservations, call 236-3391 or email the inn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
