Midsummer harvest showcases teen-grown goodies
West Rockport — The Maine Coast Heritage Trust Teen Ag Crew was hard at work the morning of Thursday, July 26. Two of the four Teen Ag Crew members were on hand at Erickson Fields Preserve to harvest herbs and vegetables to fulfill a contract with Bar Harbor-based Sassafras Catering. Sassafras Catering will utilize the garden-fresh goodies to prepare a local dinner for the MCHT board gala Friday, Aug. 3.
MCHT Community Program Manager Heather Halsey said 2012 is the first year the Teen Ag Crew has had a contract with a catering company. She said fulfilling the contract has been an educational exercise in planning as well as farming.
"The climate is so unstable it's difficult to plan in farming," Halsey said, noting temperature variations cause the standard growing time for certain crops to fluctuate considerably. She lauded Johnny's Selected Seeds — a Maine-based company that provided many of the seeds Teen Ag Crew planted — for their accurate growing information.
"Everything has come when we thought it would despite weather challenges," Halsey said.
Teen Ag Crew members Trevor Fowles, Courtney Gautreau, Laszlo Steinhoff and Chloe Isis are full-time members of the Teen Ag Crew.
